SUSTAINABILITY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBLITY

Sustainability

Sheetmetal fabrication is not traditionally seen as an environmentally friendly industry; however, progress has been made in reducing the impact and there are a number of ways we have taken a more environmentally sustainable approach.

Material Sourcing and Recycling
  • All raw metal is from recycled supply and is sourced locally where available.
  • We design the laser nests for cut material to reduce any waste.
  • All waste metal scrap is sent back to local recyclers.
Facility and Operations
Emissions
  • Emissions from the laser machines are flumed into the filters, and these are proactively maintained.
  • Welding is a challenging area to reduce impacts, however, we have made an investment in:
    • Pulse welders, to reduce overall welding emissions.
    • The use of passivation wands to reduce the use of toxic chemicals.
    • An emissions capture hood in our fabrication workshop, where other welding occurs.
  • Both of our forklifts have been replaced with electric models, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Warehousing is now co-located, further reducing travel emissions.
  • Emissions and air quality testing is imminent over the next few months, with the potential to review further improvements.
Energy Consumption
  • Facility design takes advantage of natural lighting (daylighting) reducing overall energy use and power consumption.
  • All lighting is LED with longer life span/lower carbon emissions.
  • Air circulation is through wind driven turbines.
Other Initiatives

We are currently looking at more ways to continuously improve and optimise workflows and reduce waste.

  • We are actively digitising current paper-based processes.
  • Implementing “just in time” lean manufacturing type guiding principles.
  • Optimizing production processes to reduce energy waste.
  • All office documentation is recycled.
  • All packaging is recycled.

Social Responsibility

Staff
  • We are an equal opportunity employer with a diversity of talent.
  • We currently have four apprenticeship and two cadetship positions. These are actively supported, encouraging progress towards certifications and developing talent.
  • We promote Mental Health and Wellbeing in line with the Sir John Kirwan Foundation.
Community

Support for the wider community comes in the form of sponsorship of sports clubs and involvement in charitable organisations like the following:

  • NZ Cancer Society – Daffodil Day
  • NZ Breast Cancer Active Fundraising
  • Heart Kids NZ
  • Special Childrens Christmas Parties
  • Diabetes NZ
  • Westpac Rescue Helicopters
  • Raglan Surf Lifesaving
  • Waikato Sports Fishing
  • WESMO – the University of Waikato’s Engineering Formula SAE Team
